Personal Statement
I'm looking for a candidate that is honest, and offers thoughful, informed responses to the critical questions of the day. I don't expect to agree with all the responses. The easiest choices tend to be the least politically courageous and the most short-sighted (e.g. cutting taxes, bringing all troops home ASAP). I don't like to be labeled by political party. I am a social liberal and a fiscal conservative. I support gay rights but understand the line between civil unions and marriage. The environment is at the top of my agenda, but I'm firmly in favor of using market mechanisms to most efficiently address those challenges. I think bigger government is generally more wasteful government. I think we should jealously guard our civil rights and personal freedoms, and think very carefully about giving them up, even temporarily, in times of conflict. I believe America has an obligation, and a self-interest, in playing a leadership role in world affairs.
