Rudy Giuliani Holds Town Hall Meeting
My summary:
Every subject to which Mayor Giuliani responded showed him to be passionate in his views and well prepared to speak in details and not generalities. He speaks to times when he showed leadership in lowering taxes and dealing with crisis and he conveys to me a sense of leadership in handling the problems facing this country. He really gives me confidence in him not only tackling the tough issues, but in providing the leadership and most importantly the follow through and commitment to see to their proper resolution.
I just do not get that same feeling with the other candidates. He does not talk from a script, nor do his answers come across as scripted. He is passionate. What other candidate has had to anwer the question posed by a youngster in the audience, "How would he handle an alien invasion from space?"
The specifics:
When Mayor Giuliani talked about growing the economy he spoke to many issues including legal immigration, education, trade and environment to name just four areas. He again reiterated his policy on eliminating illegal immigration while at the same time saying we need legal immigrants to help grow our economy. Often these are highly educated immigrants that bring real value to businesses requiring their particular skills.
He pointed out that improving K through 12 education in the U.S. requires us to remove the dictates of government and allow the schools to function more like our successful colleges and universities do. There are no failing colleges and universities in the U.S. because they go out of business because students will not spend their money to attend such institutions. Therefore, why should taxpayers spend their money to go to failing K-12 schools. They must be eliminated from the system if they do not improve.
He tied energy independence and trade together by saying that if we take the lead in developing alternative sources of energy production (i.e., wind and solar) we could use those developments as items to trade to nations like China and India.
