Personal Statement
As a teacher turned professor/teacher-educator, I have witnessed the crippling effects of NCLB on public schools throughout New England. Teachers are pushed to absurd extremes in the name of testing, and good teaching and authentic learning is at best squeezed in, added on, or considered "fluff." Doctors are crippled by the limits of health insurance. Neither teachers nor doctors are allowed to diagnose and "treat" those in their care; the authority now rests with bureacrats and test makers who profit off of our work. I listen to NPR or watch the evening news and feel overwhelmed and hopeless. Sometimes I'm so angry that I want to take to the streets, calling out to my neighbors to join me. I thank NHPR for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts and channel them into some form of action. I've beenĀ at different points overwhelmed and underwhelmed by the candidates.
