Huckabee: Captivated a 7-year-old but not her mom
Today I dropped everything so I could go and hear Mike Huckabee speak. I heard him during his Republican debate at UNH and was impressed enough to say-Hey, here is a guy I don't know much about-but I want to learn more. So, I was excited when I heard he was going to be in Exeter at a time I could go and hear him speak.
I run my daughter out of ballet to race over to the Townlyne. Bella is thrilled, no, really she is, that she gets to hear someone speak about why he wants to be president. She shakes his hand and said that her name is Bella and that she is 7 years old. They have a conversation about her age-then we move to the back of the room. When he starts taking questions my politically astute, I pause for a breath here, daughter runs up to be close to him to "hear what he has to say". I strain as well...but, yet, hours later, I am still not sure what he has to say except that he is gaining in the polls for the republican party and that he is the only one who has "beat the Clinton machine". My daughter goes to private school in Maine because I am not happy with my choices in Exeter. I would like to hear what he would do to change public education. I would like to hear about his plan for energy independence. He was very keen on his rising poll numbers and his residential charter schools that he set up in Arkansas (I believe charter schools are great-we have a wonderful one here on the seacoast-but, knowing my 7 year old she is not quite ready to live away from home in a residential one).
I came away from my meeting Huckabee knowing less than when I walked into the Townlyne-that discourages me a bit.
